Sadly, UFC fans will not be seeing former Middleweight Title contender Chael Sonnen in the octagon anytime soon….and according to Sonnen himself, we may never see it again.
Today, during a special meeting, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) ruled to uphold Sonnen’s current suspension. In their decision, which passed with a 4-1 vote, the CSAC cited both Chael’s money-laundering conviction as well as his “questionable” testimony in the case of his positive drug test following UFC 117.
What does this mean you ask? Due to this ruling, Sonnen cannot reapply for a license before June 29, 2012, at which time he will have to again appear before the CSAC.
Confirming swirling rumors, Sonnen did reveal during the meeting that the UFC was looking at him and Michael Bisping as coaches for TUF 14. However, with the outcome of the meeting now said and done, that most likely will no longer be the case, since they wouldn’t be allowed to fight at the end of the season. As you know, The Ultimate Fighter films in Nevada, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission usually upholds rulings of other jurisdictions. During testimony today, Sonnen said he will most likely retire from MMA if the CSAC’s ruling is not in his favor. Which it wasn’t, so let’s see what happens next.
So, what do you think? Fair punishment for Chael Sonnen, or are you sad that he stays suspended and will probably retire? Hit the comments.
