Southern Championship Wrestling presents:
“Ring Wars”
9/11/2010
If you’re a fan of the show, or if you’re a normal human being that spends hours aimlessly flipping through the channels on your television, you’ve probably seen at least one wrestling match in your day. Most everyone has at least heard of WWE or maybe even WCW. But, there are many independent wrestling organizations that never see the light of the boob tube. This past Saturday, I got to experience one of these organizations. It was a small event in a civic center that holds up to 7800 people. Luckily, only about 150-200 people showed up (if that), and my $10 ticket for the nosebleed seats got bumped up to a $45 ticket 4 rows away from the ring for no charge.
The doors opened for the event at 6pm and the first bell rang at 7:30pm. The hour and a half before bell time was a meet and greet with some of the wrestlers that attended the event. Most notably, Hector Guerrero, Diamond Dallas Page, Booker T, and Kip James (Bad Ass Billy Gunn) were available for autographs and pictures. Being the big wrestling fan I am, this was the main reason I even considered going to the event (hence the $10 tickets). Hector Guerrero is a wrestling legend. Being able to see him wrestle and interact with the fans was a once in a lifetime experience. Meeting DDP was an honor and a privilege. Without a doubt, he is one of the greatest wrestlers and entertainers of all time.
At 7:30, the lights dimmed, and it was time for Ring Wars…
The opening ceremonies consisted of a moment to honor the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner.
After the Anthem, the ring announcer/master of ceremonies “Mighty Ox” came out to introduce the first match.
Match 1: Craig Classic vs Flatline
Elapsed time: 5:48
Craig Classic seemed like your typical amateur wrestler. Blue tights, chiseled physique. Flatline was quite strange. Wore a mask with green dreadlocks made of yarn, black and green robe with black tights. He also carried a kendo stick to the ring. There was a lot of threatening with the kendo stick in this match by both competitors, and not much wrestling. Eventually, the match picked up, and showed why these two were still in the minor leagues. Botches, botches, botches. Otherwise, an enjoyable match.
Winner: Flatline by pin
Next segment: A promo featuring DDP, Jeff Zeto and Dumb Chris from 99X, The Heartbreak Express and BG James (Road Dogg Jesse James)
This promo was a typical run-at-the-mouth promo. Zeto and Dumb Chris Came out with a bag full of 99X t-shirts and passed them out to the crowd. DDP comes out to his “Self High Five” theme and cuts a quick mic promo only to be interrupted by one of the shittiest tag teams I’ve ever seen in my life: The Heartbreak Express. Picture a fat Dusty Rhodes and a guy that looks like Tyson Kidd dressed in hot pink and lime green spandex with 2 super hot chicks on their arms. The Express then start to talk shit to Zeto, Chris, and DDP when BG James comes out to save the day. BG James then challenges the Express to a 3-on-2 Handicap match vs James, Chris, and Zeto. The Express accept, and the promo ends with DDP performing a Diamond Cutter on the Tyson Kidd look alike. Overall, aside from DDP’s speech and Diamond Cutter, it was a lackluster promo.
Match 2: Dirty White Boy vs Jonny Vandal
Elapsed time: 7:30
On his way out to the ring, Dirty White Boy does nothing but talk trash to the audience. He is obviously a heel. He’s trying wayyy too hard. But, the sad part? It’s actually working. I found myself yelling at him throughout the entire match. Once we got through the initial “I’m going to talk shit to the crowd” phase, we finally get into some very good technical wrestling with a lot of highflying action. It really turned into a great match. I was impressed.
Winner: Dirty White Boy by pin.
Match 3: Heartbreak Express vs BG James, Zeto, and Dumb Chris
Elapsed time: 9:46
Okay, this was one match that I was REALLY not looking forward to. 2 guys with absolutely no wrestling background, 2 guys with no talent, and 1 guy that was an average wrestler in his prime? Well, at least there were 2 hot chicks ringside. Most of the action was stale and uninteresting. The only 2 on the 99X side that got in the ring were BG and Chris, and Chris was in the action more time than BG. You would think that if you’ve got one person on the team with ring-experience, you’d utilize him more. But, no. We get Dumb Chris getting the Dumb SHIT kicked out of him by the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. The match ends in a “stunning” turn of events when BG James turns on Zeto and Chris, and tells them he wants a match vs Team 99X October 9th, when SCW comes back to Ft. Myers. Then, proceeds to kick the shit out of them and leaves. Such an enthralling match. /sarcasm
Winner: No contest.
Match 4: New Yoricans vs Kahangas and Hector Guerrero
Elapsed time: 7:14
FINALLY. A match with known talent. The New Yoricans (Ricanz In Charge) come out first, and they’re pretty much an LAX clone. Very stereotypical and very obnoxious. Kahangas then comes out, he’s from Japan, has a painted face, and carries a kendo stick. There is then a long pause before the next entrance. Hector’s music hits, and he walks out with his huge VIVA MEXICO sombrero on. Once he’s done parading around the ring, the action starts. Very, very good wrestling. Most of the great wrestling comes out of Hector. It’s nice to know that after all these years, he’s still got it. After about 6 minutes of wrestling, the ref gets knocked out. The Ricanz then get a hold of the kendo stick. When trying to hit Kahangas and Hector with it, they counter and get the stick away from them. They then proceed to beat the shit out of the Ricanz with the kendo stick, place the stick in one of the Rican’s hand, look at each other, and fall to the ground just as the ref is coming to. The ref then gathers the info: Hector and Kahangas are knocked out and the Ricanz have the kendo stick. Something fishy must be going on. The ref rings the bell, and this match has a classic Guerrero ending.
Winners: Kahangas and Hector Guerrero by disqualification.
After the match, the owner of SCW invites Hector to stay in the ring. They then thank him for his more than 30 years in the wrestling business with a plaque. He then proceeds to joke that he’s been wrestling for 37 years and that the plaque is wrong. After a quick speech, he then leaves the ring with his wife, and goes to the back. I shook his hand, and I say “Thank you, Mr. Guerrero for everything you’ve done for the business.”
Match 5: Traci Brooks vs Becky Bayless
Elapsed time: 6:44
Traci comes out first wearing very skimpy bottoms and an oversized SCW t-shirt saying that she wasn’t going to show off her goods to all us perverts. Of course, we all know what’s going to happen next. Becky then comes out and starts beating the shit out of Traci and, to everyone’s surprise, rips off the SCW t-shirt and throws it into the crowd. They then start to “wrestle”. I use the term “wrestle” loosely because the match was nothing but botches. A very, very sloppy performance.
Winner: Becky Bayless by pin.
Match 6: Jason Hexx vs Pablo Marquez
Elapsed time: 10:31
Jason Hexx comes out and immediately gets on the mic. He talks for what seems 5 minutes before being interrupted by Pablo Marquez’s entrance. Marquez and Hexx then lock up and give a pretty solid performance. Marquez had a lot of high-flying moves while Hexx was more technical. It was a great mixture of styles that really would have been pulled off better if the talent had a little more sill. For what it’s worth, it was still a very solid match.
Winner: Jason Hexx by pin
After his win, Hexx again picks up the mic and starts to cut another quick and annoying promo. Thankfully, he’s once again interrupted, this time by Diamond Dallas Page. DDP comes out and congratulates Hexx on his win, and proceeds to shake his hand. During the handshake, DDP performs a Diamond Cutter on Hexx. Great end to a shitty promo.
Final Match: Booker T vs Kip James for the vacated SCW Heavyweight Championship
Elapsed time: 12:38
Finally time for the main event of the evening. Finally a match with known talent. Finally a match that doesn’t suck? Well, I can’t go that far. The first 5 minutes of the match consisted of hammer locks, break ups, then Billy interacting with the crowd. After all this distraction, we finally get into some wrestling action. For two seasoned veterans, the match was very lackluster. Not much of their signature styles, or any moves worth noting except for a scissor kick by Booker T followed by a Spineroonie. The match ended very abruptly and without any real rhyme or reason with Booker T on top.
Winner: Booker T by pin.
All in all, it was a pretty decent night of wrestling. It wasn’t exactly a TNA event, but it was passable entertainment. SCW will return to the Lee County Civic Center on October 9th. I’m planning on going, and will have another article on that event exclusively on mytakeradio.com
