Bald Rage: Junior Dos Santos Is Not Ready

Once again, I just have to preface this by saying that this is my opinion and mine alone. Please feel free to agree or disagree. I am no sports writer or analyst, I just call it how I see it. Congratulations to Dos Santos on winning last night’s bout against Roy “Big Country” Nelson – especially since the win guarantees him a title shot against the winner of Velasquez vs. Lesnar at UFC 121.

A quick note on UFC 121. My money is on Lesnar this time. Ryan Bader says that once Lesnar gets tired it will be Cain all the way. I say if getting beaten in the face repeatedly by Shane Carwin for three minutes will make any man tired and look what happened – Lesnar still has his belt. Now you know who I think Dos Santos will be fighting and here is why I say the Dos Santos of last night is not ready. I take nothing away from Roy Nelson; he took everything Dos Santos had to give and he stuck through the fight , even getting some surprise blows in that might have turned the fight around. I like Roy Nelson: he puts on a good show and he throws a monkey wrench in the gears of the UFC. If a big, relatively out of shape guy like that can be a contender, that makes the average guy at home feel a little bit better about not having the physique of the average MMA fighter.

Brock Lesnar is not the average MMA fighter. Love him or hate him, the man is a monster. I have seen a few of Junior’s fights – he has power, but I doubt he has the striking power of Shane Carwin, who could not KO Lesnar. Dos Santos kept hitting Nelson in the gut, I guess trying to take the wind out of him. I am sitting there going nuts watching that. “What are you doing? You’re punching a sponge!” And he was because Nelson was literally absorbing those body shots. At the end I said “If I am Junior Dos Santos, and I hope to be the heavyweight champion, I should not be going to decision against Big Country”.”  Once again, I am not downing Nelson, but when he was getting hit in the face he fell back and more than once even fell down. Why did Junior not stick with this? He was never in any real trouble during the fight. I hope he trains like his life depends on it for this title bout because if he fights like he did last night, he will come out of the cage looking like what he acme into the cage as – number two.
