Batman Beyond returns.….but in comic book form.

Most of us loved the old Batman Beyond cartoon that aired around a decade ago.

It was the amazing child of the excellent Batman animated series that aired before it, and was a lot darker in tone than most cartoons airing at the time, especially considering it’s target audience and time slot, it was a Saturday morning cartoon, yet the subject matter and violent nature of this show was definitely aimed towards older viewers.

Anyone who loved Batman: The animated series quickly became fans of Batman Beyond, even creating new fans with its mature subject matter.

Sadly, it was cancelled abruptly after only two and a half seasons, specifically on the third season in January of 2005, after the episode :“The Once and Future Thing, Part 2″.

Since then, all we’ve received to whet our Batman Beyond appetites was a terribly written retcon inducing Justice League episode where we find out Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond’s alter ego) was somehow made to be the actual son of the original Batman , Bruce Wayne through some farfetched genetic swapping method that is a ridiculous stretch, even for DC comics.

Google it, I don’t have the stomach to even get into it.

Now, the gods of everything awesome in comics , will bestow upon us a new six part Batman Beyond series starting next Wednesday, June 30, and carrying on until whenever the hell they finish it.

Art is being done by the phenomenal Ryan Benjamin:

And it is being written by Adam Beechen, who wrote some issues of Countdown to Final Crisis for DC.

This comic series is volume 3 of the series, continuing after the first 2 volumes of comics which were based on the TV series, and carrying on after the Return of the Joker movie as well, but before McGinnis finds out Bruce Wayne is his bio-dad.

The story is about some possibly new villains going around and killing anyone who has ever had ANYTHING to do with the orignal batman, friend or foe.

So this looks like it’s going to carry on the mature subject matter we’ve grown to expect, and also sounds like it’s really going to be interesting.

Here is a picture of the first issue, looks good, I can’t wait until next week when I receive my copy and begin to dive right into the new adventures of Batman Beyond.
